40.In choosing a transpo rtation mode fo r a particular product, shippers consider as many as six criteria: speed, frequency, dependability, capability, availability and cost. Thus if a shipper seeks speed, air and truck are the prime contenders. If the go al is low cost, then water and pipeline are the prime contenders. Shippers are increasingly co mbining two or mo re transpo rtatio n modes, thanks to containerization. Containerizatio n co nsists of putting the goods in bo xes or trailers that are easy to transfer between two transportatio n modes.
